A visit to Cairns & the Atherton Tablelands in mid January proved worthwhile despite the torrential rains & flooding. We managed to sidestep the worst of the rain most of the time although we got pretty wet here & there, & couldn't get to a few places due to flooding. Almost 200 species were seen, even though there was not much activity at all on some days. Interesting birds around Cairns were Red Knot & Pied Heron on the Esplanade, Beach Stone Curlew at Buchans Beach,Crimson Finches at Edmonton & a Black Bittern at El Arish. On the tablelands we saw Varied Sitella (Striata), Bush hens were active in a few places, Blue-faced Parrot-finches were present at two sites on Mt Lewis, & the highlight was a Buff-breasted Button-quail near Mt Molloy.
