I went past the pond at about 6pm on the way home tonight and saw the Lewin's
Rail within seconds in the reeds north east of the southern platform.
The pond is very low now, but still not quite as low as it was on the day it
was first seen, 19/1/08. There are now huge areas of mud, but still a few spots
where the water's edge extends into the reeds, and it was in one of those spots
that I saw it tonight.
I saw it again a few minutes later in similar wet reeds opposite the platform.
I was surprised how fast it got there, so perhaps there really are two in
there. But seeing how fast it can run, it could have simply run along the bank
while I wasn't looking.
It wandered around a bit back in the reeds and had a bath, then disappeared.
The Spotless Crakes were easily visible around the place, but still no
Baillon's or Spotted.
Very light rain has been falling here on and off since then, but I doubt much
has ended up as runoff.
