The port at Broome is a very good place to photograph the 'opthalmicus' race of Sooty Oystercatcher. There are usually about 10 in the area. High tide is best, when they are pushed off the rocks on to the beach. There is also a mixed flock of Sooty and Pied Oystercatchers on Roebuck Bay, but they move between beaches so it could take you a little while to locate, but you should be able to get good photos there also. They mostly have engraved leg flags, so any one who visits there should record the two character codes and let the BBO or AWSG know. There is a lot to be learnt from the movement of these birds, both locally between beaches, and hopefully breeding locations away from Broome.

I am not certain about your birds. They have a lot more colour around the eyes than birds I have photographed near Albany on the south coast of WA, but not as much colour as the Broome birds.
