Newhaven to Ayers Rock

Di and I will be visiting Newhaven (4WD campervan) at Easter, prior to
heading for Ayers Rock for a work meeting (Diana's).

Is there anyone with local knowledge of the roads who can advise whether
there is a reasonable 4WD road from the Tanami Road south to Ayers Rock via
King's Canyon (rather than driving on the main roads via Alice Springs and
Erldunda). Any info gratefully received.
