Pied Oystercatcher vs SIPO

Hi everyone,



Recently we visited Wingan Inlet in the far east of Victoria. On walking
along the beach we came across a Pied Oystercatcher. To my mind this bird
seemed slightly more dumpy than a “normal” Pied Oystercatcher and certainly
had quite a bright bill. This lead me to wonder if there are any reliable
ways of distinguishing between a Pied Oystercatcher and a SIPO when the bird
is not observed in flight? Reading through Pizzey and Knight (7th Edition)
and looking at Frank Knight’s wonderful plates, it is not really clear to me
how you could distinguish between the two species unless you actually saw
the underside of the bird in flight.
