Gday Frank

Thought I?d let you know about a recent King Penguin sighting in Geraldton. A juvenile turned up on Coronation Beach on the 14th January near the windsurfers camp. Some of our staff took photos the following day and we identified it as a king penguin. See photos attached.

Unfortunately we went back to the site the next day (16th) and the bird was dead and had had its head removed. My impression is that it had been removed by a knife and I?d like to think that it was done by a fisherman after they found the dead body. We may never know. I?m taking the carcass to the museum staff in Perth next week.

It?s been a big 18 months for Geraldton ? Arctic Tern, Black-tailed Gull and now King Penguin!

Regards
Rory Chapple
