Dear all
Met up with Ken Singleton today at South West Rocks, north coast NSW,
who very kindly escorted us to the present wetland where the Lesser
Yellowlegs was easily found consorting with about 10 Marsh Sandpipers
and about 20 Sharp-tailed SPs. A very easy twitch I must say and thank
you Ken.
Its Yellowlegs certainly make it stand out from a crowd. Interestingly
it was constantly scratching its neck and head while preening (wondered
if it had a lice problem), and also when preening its wing coverts, many
times dipped it beak in the water, continued preening, and repeat,
repeat, and would every now and again, lift its right leg out of the
water and shake it quite vigorously. Otherwise seemed very healthy and
alert.
A nice Australian visitor. Thank you Ken.
After that we visited Seal Road and the swamp south of Gladstone, but
conditions were pretty hopeless there - too much water and lush growth
of grass and reeds, lots of Black Swans, a few Black Duck, Hardhead and
Little Pied Cormorants.
