AusBirders,
I went over this morning (8/1) to the Goolwa Barrage area near the Murray
Mouth to check out the shorebirds and was supprised how much the water level
had fallen since I was there several weeks ago. Between the barrage and the
Goolwa waterfront 3 quite large mud flats have appeared in the centre and
the birds (ducks and shorebirds) were making the most of it. Ducks included
many Aust. Shelducks and Teal while the shorebirds were mostly Sharp-tailed,
Curlew and Little Stints. The water must have dropped a few inches since I
was last over there so by the end of summer I suspect more mud flats in the
middle will be exposed although the shoreline has been receding for
sometime.
On the sea side of the barrage the most notable shorebirds I saw were 3 Red
Knots. 5 Gull-billed Terns were also present in full breeding plumage. Early
last summer I had a single of the subspecies 'afinis' in basic plumage in
the same area but havn't seen it this summer.
