Colin, Rob and I popped down from Brisbane to SW Rocks yesterday,
hoping that the rain spreading down the east coast hadn't led the
Yellowlegs to fly the coop. [Yes, we were late going on a twitch
because it took a while for a travel window for the three of us to
open].
We drove through a series of moderate to heavy showers on the way down
- Needle-tailed Swifts were quite numerous to the north and south of
Coffs Harbour.
We arrived in Jerseyville [taking Plumber's Lane from the Hwy] late in
the morning to find that the bird had last been seen buggering off in
a westerley direction earlier that day. With the help of Ken
Singleton, we checked out a number of wetlands along Boyter's Lane and
Rainbow Reach Lane - we found the Marshies the Yellowlegs had been
associating with, Shanks, Golds, Sharpies, Godwits and lots of Snipe,
but no Yellowlegs.
We were planning to search again this morning, but a heavy downpour
[Ken measured ~120 mm in his rain gauge] in the evening saw us bugging
out of our campsite [to avoid inundation] and driving out to the
Highway to avoid the possibility of being stranded in SW Rocks. After
a bit of birding around Coffs Harbour [Rob found a Superb Lyrebird for
Colin] we drove steadily north to get through before road was cut
south of Ballina.
Ken is doing a stirling job keeping track of the Yellowlegs, and
hopefully will be able to refind the bird when the floodplain dries
out a bit.
Regards, Laurie.
