Yesterday on my place in the Capertee Valley I saw a Painted Button-quail with at least two half-grown young following along behind.

The other interesting thing was, on the Capertee River downstream from Glen Davis (near the NPWS camping area) we listened to a Superb Lyrebird in full voice and amongst the many birds it was mimicking was a very clear rendition of Pilotbird - a species not yet on the Capertee Valley list (although it certainly occurs in nearby areas of Wollemi NP). Also, as soon as this lyrebird mimicked a part of a Laughing Kookaburra call, a whole family of kookaburras in the surrounding trees replied by launching into full chorus, completely drowning out the lyrebird for a few minutes. Much has been written about why other birds aren't fooled by the lyrebird's mimicry, but in this case it seems they were!

The Capertee Valley is in the NSW central tablelands, 3 hours from Sydney.

Cheers,

Carol
