Far North Queensland Tablelands trip Jan 1 2008
Jun Matsui and I did a trip round from Cairns to Yungaburra and back
via Mareeba for New Years Day. Highlights as below:
First bird of the year was Orange-footed Scrubfowl calling at 1100.
First actually seen was Yellow-bellied Sunbird. Red-necked Crake
calling well at Cassowary House.
Cairns- good selection of shorebirds including both sandplovers,
Terek Sand, Curlew and Sharp-tailed Sand, Grey-tailed Tattler, 5
Little Terns, on an indifferent ebbing tide.
Lake Barrine: Tooth-billed Bowerbirds still singing strongly by their
stages.
Curtain Fig- Pied Monarchs very active, and a Bower's Shrike-thrush
busy building a nest.
2 White-headed Pigeon by Lake Tinaroo.
Mareeba rock wallaby very visible late pm, also pretty-face wallaby
along Henry Hannam Drive.
Hastie's Swamp now very overgrown with ephemeral vegetation and
almost no birds there.
Best wishes to all for a bird filled 2008
