After reading the replies from Keith Weekes and Peter Shute I can see
that there is a lack of understanding as to what "I and the Bird" is
about. First, I apologise if my notification was brief, that is simply
the result of doing it on 64 occasions.
Secondly, neither "10,000 Birds" or "I and the Bird" are commercial
sites, yes, ads may appear, but many bloggers have these as a means of
defraying the costs of running a website.
"10,000 Birds" is the birding blog of Mike Bergin, a relatively new but
very keen birder from New York, his co-contributors are Cory Finger, and
Charlie Moores, a top British birder and photographer and brother of
Niall Moores of Birds Korea, who helped lead the fight against the
disastrous closing of the Saemangeum Estuary in South Korea.
"I and the Bird" was Mike's idea, a fortnightly collection of bird blog
posts from all over the world, each put together by a different blogger
using a theme of their choosing. Yes, the bulk are from North America,
but there are always one or two from Australia, and others appear from
countries like the UK, Tanzania, Sri Lanka etc. I realise that many on
Birding-Aus are primarily interested in Australian birds, as indeed I
am, but I know there are others with impressive world lists who would be
interested in overseas birds. Regardless of our preferences, a blog post
like James Wolstencroft's current entry on the critically endangered
Beesley's Lark in Tanzania is absorbing reading for anyone concerned
with bird conservation and habitat degradation.

I also realise that to many people blogs are regarded with disdain, but
there is an increasing number of excellent bird and nature based blogs
emanating from Australia that are well worth following.
Finally, I started notifying the list to help Mike get "I and the Bird"
up and running, and continued doing so to make it simple for interested
birders to access the current edition. "I and the Bird" probably doesn't
need it any more, and as far as Birding-Aus goes it seems that I may
have been wasting my time, the fortnightly notification will now cease.
Duncan Fraser.
