Hi All,
Just back from doing my duty, though disappointingly quiet, at 4:30
on a warm Tassie afternoon. Only got Sparrow, Goldfinch and Masked
Lapwing. I felt sure the regular Swift Parrots would be in the gum
trees at the local High School, but not today. Sigh! Lots of party
spruikers, who looked like they could do with an interesting
diversion. Perhaps I should have got them to join in this
competition in their own way, and see what they could see while
handing out how-to-vote cards.

I had a similar plan, and used Google Earth to choose a route
making the
most of the local vegetation as cover, and a quick dash across the
road
to the entrance. It mostly worked, though the queue left me stranded
in the open... I met the local Greens senate candidate, Kerry Tucker,
so it seemed rude to decline a how-to-vote card. The other was
from an
ALP helper, who must have mistaken me for someone else: "Kevin?"
Running the gauntlet of the local primary school teatowel and cookery
book hard-sellers on the way out was more harrowing that avoiding the
party reps. on the way in! ;)
My own ballot list was far more modest than others:
   Galah
   Red-rumped Parrot
   Pied Currawong
   Rugrattus sp.
