I was just wondering if it is unusual magpie behavior to nest twice or more
in one season?

My partner and I have been watching a friendly Magpie pair nest in a urban
park near us, and two healthy babies have recently left the nest. They've
been out of the nest for about a month now.

They are still very baby-like and beg the parents for food with the whole
wing flapping routine, but in the last week they have started eating a
little by themselves. The father still feeds them, but last week we noticed
the mother attacking the babies viciously when they tried to beg food from
her . One of them rolled over onto its back and pretended to be dead, and
the other one sat on its belly (maybe trying to pretend it was back in the
nest?). Since then, they still get excited when she's around, but the are
too scared to go near her now. We though it was a bit strange as they are so
young!

Then today, we noticed her sittng in another nest, about 30 meteres away
from the last one. She appears to be sitting on new eggs already, which
perhaps explains some of her aggression toward her young.

If anyone could tell me if this is normal, I would appreciate it very much!

Cheers!

.
