Russell sent me a link to a site about Pied Babblers from the Kalahari
which, as he pointed out, are similar to "my" leucistic birds. I
followed the link
http://www.fitzpatrick.uct.ac.za/docs/piedbabb.html
and found a reference to a paper, which you can download on pdf,
entitled "Facultative response to a kleptoparasite by the
cooperatively breeding pied babbler" which I found interesting. Very
briefly it is about how Babblers respond to stealing of their food by
Drongos ie kleptoparasitism. How successful Drongos are is dependent on
the size of the group of Babblers. Drongos have been observed making
false alarm calls to draw Babblers away form food so they can steal it.
Has anyone observed similar kleptoparasitic behaviour by Drongos towards
Babblers in Australia?
Regards,
Barry Davies
