Folks,

Common Sandpipers have arrived – the first at Penrhyn yesterday (up what I
call Straight Tunnel Creek) and the second found by Ray Gobbe this morning
on the (now largely burnt-out) barges at Homebush Bay, close to the bird
hide. The second bird was unusual in that the ‘white hooks’ were not in
evidence and the usual fine barring on the wings was absent – aside from
that all aspects (long tail, bobbing action etc) were there. I am at a loss.

Mason Park today saw c. 50 Sharpies, at least 9 Curlew Sand, many Stilts (c
10 breeding pairs), as well as 2 rather handsome full winter plumage Pacific
GPs, both with clean fresh tertials almost as long as the wings. The
Sharpies and Curlew Sand flew off about 4.30pm.

15 minutes later, Hen and Chicken Bay, Abbotsford, had over 50 BTGodwits.
There were also Curlew Sand and Sharpies (which tend to move between Mason
Park at high tide and here at low tide).

Cheers,

Graham Buchan
