My daughter and I spend over 3 weeks birding in sub-antarctic waters. Most people swear by the patches and they helped everybody on the ship who had a problem except my daughter. The side effect is a very dry mouth. I think they are still unobtainable in Australia but you can certainly buy them without prescription in both NZ and the US. My daughter was violently ill for the first 5 days but then she managed OK after we had a full day ashore on Enderby Island where she could hold down special tablets that the Dr on board provided and was pretty good after that. She gets seasick on the ferry platoon at Circular Quay in Sydney. Those tablets are also unavailable in Australia and NZ but they can be bought in the UK. If anyone is interested I can get the details from her. And yes it can be very rough in subantartic waters - you can never use both hands at once unless you are securely seated - always need one hand for the ship.

Cheers,

Fiona
