My local female has arrived today in Maroochydore, SEQ, 100 km north of
Brisbane. She is getting earlier and earlier. Until last year, the male
always arrived first, generally from as early as 1st October, but on one
occasion as late as 15th October. The female always seemed to arrive ten days
after the male.

Last year, I couldn't believe when she arrived on 24th September. I heard her
calls at about 5:15 am and had to check! The male did not arrive until 15th
November! He had never been so late, and I was convinced he had perished.
She did not let any other male into the territory, and when he finally arrived,
there was great celebration and constant mating for TWO MONTHS!!!

Female Koel has now arrived on 15th September, with excited calling as she flew
in. Unfortunately, I had to have her favourite tree trimmed drastically
recently, and she did a double-take in mid-air when her roost site was missing,
but landed in her other perching tree. They must navigate down to the last
inch of accuracy! She is a gorgeous creature.

Last season, she spent twenty-seven and a half weeks here, and it is only
twenty-three and a half weeks since she departed. This is a real change in
behaviour on her part, so I am interested to see when and if the male arrives.

Does anyone have any studies on the migrations of the Koels?

Cheers

Robyn
