I had always beleived that there was more to threats from dogs than physically scaring the birds away by their presence. The main threat which dogs induce to wildlife is in their urine and feaces, the mere smell of dog excrement forms barriers to which birds & other wildlife (especially mammals) will not cross or even venture near. There have even been reports of marsupials aborting pouched young upon the detection of dog feaces and or urine.

I can't see how birders could cause the same disturbance.
I say ban accompanied dogs from all bushland areas, even those on a leash, and destroy all those which aren't accompanied.
