Picking up on recent comments on fires started by hot car exhausts and
cat-crackers:
We were told of a quail-shooter who was driving on wheat stubble in
an early model Range Rover (petrol fuelled). To his horror, after a
fairly successful time shooting quail, he found he was trailing a fire
through the stubble and dry grass. Grass and stubble straws had built
up on the car's bottom and then caught fire from the hot exhaust - and
this had then burnt through the plastic return line which takes excess
fuel back from the fuel-pump to the tank. So petrol was being sprayed
onto the fire...
He promptly drove the car into the dam, and bailed out clutching his
shotgun, while teenage son went out the other side, clutching his
ghetto-blaster.
When the car was pulled out next day, it was full of yabbies, which
had eaten the quail in the back.
The design fault in the car is obvious. But not everyone knows of
the folly of driving through dry grass and stubble in a petrol-driven
vehicle.
I'd be careful about this in a diesel as well.

Everyone,
Appologises to anyone who isn't interested but I'd
like some car advice.
I'm looking to buy a new car this month or next and
have narrowed it down to 2 choices...Nissan X-trail
and Toyota Rav 4.
For someone who just wants a bit of clearance and some
very tame (VERY TAME) 4WDing which would be the best
choice?
Cheers,
