Our Kimberley foray saw us also grab the chance to make an afternoon
boat trip on Sept. 3 on Lake Argyle with Lake Argyle Cruises, where
Greg and Matt were brilliant, adding us to a fishing charter at short
notice and then waiting for us when we belatedly realised we had to
go to Lake Argyle and not Kunununurra!
\We headed to the low flat island at the Grass Castle Plains end of
the lake, about 45 min in the fast (20 knots) launch, and made a wet
landing- breaking through the bottom crust added about 20 cm of
wetness, but we soon dried (and then got wet again reboarding, but it
was worth it)
We spent about 3 hours on the island, and basically walked right
round it surveying the birds.
Highlights:
Australian Hobby 1, Swamp Harrier 1, Sharp-tailed Sand 70, Pectoral
Sand 1, Red-necked Stint 2, Long-toed Stint 1, Curlew Sand 12,
Australian Painted Snipe 1 f (there were 3 here last week), Red-
kneed Dotterel 15, Yellow Chat 15- at least 3 males and a group of 7
female plumaged birds, some almost sandy white beneath; Rainbow Bee-
eater 2.
That morning we dipped on Gouldian Finches at Wyndham Culture Park,
but had very nice Mangrove Golden Whistlers (race robusta), Arafura
Fantail, Yellow White-eye and Red-headed Myzomela at mangroves some
15 km along the King River Road, also a few Star Finch there and some
Long-tailed.
