Hi All
I visited Muogamarra NR, which is near Cowan, on the Pacific Hwy north of Sydney
at the weekend. The NR is only open 5 or 6 weekends a year, during spring, and
offers some great walks, superb views over the Hawkesbury and this season is a
very good wildflower season. I went with my family on Sunday and enjoyed 2
walks to Lloyd Trig and the Western Loookout. Although I saw some good birds, I
was surprised at how sparse the birds were, given the number of flowers and
insects around, but some good sightings and "listenings" included:
- party of about 10 Varied Sitella in the trees in the car park area
- lots of Striated Thornbills, showing well throughout
- Wonga Pigeon calling strongly (or incessantly?) from Peats Crater (my kids
counted 50 or so "woop"s before they gave up and it was still going)
- 2 distant Glossy Black Cockatoos over Peats Crater (I was standing at the
western lookout at the time)
- several White Eared Honeyeayers showing well and calling
- single female Pink Robin near the car park
- 2 Noisy Friarbirds at the picnic area
- surprisingly, no raptors (over the Hawkesbury or surrounding hills) - and we
spent plenty of time on the good vantage points that the reserve offers
