Oh Mike!

Bayside welcomes tourists and our main Barbary Dove site (near where that dying white morph Southern Giant-Petrel was found in June) is readily accessible by train from Flinders St. to Brighton Beach.

So far this month, up to 3 have been seen, on four occasions. BUT they have not been seen there in 35 of the 55 months since they were first recorded in January 2003, and they have never been recorded for more than 4 months in a row.

I guess what is happening is that someone is releasing caged birds from time to time. However in the same period there have been 5 additional records or reports from residential areas, all within 3km, including a breeding report.

So if anyone wants to track them down - and help to find nests! - please get in touch.

Michael Norris
