Hi Peter,
I went the other direction (Charleville - Miles/Chinchilla in May/June this year. The best spot I found on this route was Tregole NP, just south of Morven, about 1hr drive east of Charleville. there's a good circular walk going through a range of habitats indicated using a fairly good guide brochure available at the info shelter in the carpark.
In October the Black orchids (epiphytic) might be in flower on the trees.
Mitchell is also a lovely spot to stop for a break. Walk under the bridge on the footbridge and look at the murals on the bridge supports.
