Also something to do the number of subscribers. A bird list with a membership of say 10,000 would need to limit the terms of postings to prevent a flood of email.

Sure is. Indeed probably several of them. I am subscribed to one based
around LA California (as I thought I would be going there next month).
This one is much tighter than birding aus. People keep only to the topic
of local birds. Other chat does not appear.
