We don't usually promote products on Birding-Aus, but here is
somethign that I'm sure a lot of birders will want to know about:
http://www.trackstick.com/trackstickII.htm
The Trackstick is a smallish device that records GPS data when you
are on the move. It's about the size of the larger Mp3 player / USB
memory stick combos, runs on a couple of AAA batteries and has enough
onboard memory to track your movements for several weeks. It
integrates fully with Google Earth - so you can carry it around on a
trip, mark where you've seen key species, and upload the info to your
own Google Earth map when you get home. IT works with Google Maps,
MapQuest and VirtualEarth.
Yes, lots of birders do this already with sophisticated GPS handheld
devices. But the Trackstick seems to be a bit of a jump ahead in
terms of ease of use, size, and integration with 3D mapping
software. It's just that I'm not game to look at the prices because
I know I want one ....
