Dear Birders,
My wife and I visited the grasslands tucked in between Brisbane airport and the
Gateway Expressway on Friday evening and managed to see a Grass Owl flying
overhead. Wonderful to see this great bird after a number of unrewarded outings
looking for it.
The visit was a result of a suggestion from Mat Gilfedder who had seen the Owl
there previously. His instructions were:-
1) drive out of the airport terminal, and out the airport drive, and turn
north on the gateway motorway (i.e. towards sunshine coast)
2) drive about 1km north, and take the first exit north of the airport
exit (this is the end of Toombul Rd),
3) drive ¾ of the way around the roundabout, and pull over into a gravel
area on the SE edge of the roundabout.
4) Jump the gate (perfectly legal - it is a "council parkland") and
follow the mowed tracks to your right, and then out into the middle of the
grassed area
As it happened Mat was available to join us so the instructions were
substituted by his direct guidance. The site is ideal as there is a large area
of long grass through which the council has mown wide paths making the walking
very easy. We arrived about 5:15 pm and the Owl flew over just after dusk at
5:45. I was surprised at how high the bird was but it circled a number of times
and it's long bare legs were very obvious in the spotlight. Even the mosquitos
were noticeable by their absence - a perfect birding experience.
