nice sentiment about putting the money somewhere else Tom, but I think it was sold because of the absence of that money in the first place. BA over-reached itself in the purchase of Newhaven and couldn't afford the upkeep, hence making it a 'give-away' to a more financially robust environmental organisation. Many of us clearly have indigestion about that. It was part of a shift in the BA vision away from managing bird observatories to land ownership. Ever wonder why we only have two bird observatories left when BA used to have four, and why the remaining two struggle so much to remain viable? I have indigestion about that. (now I'm not clear on what the vision is, btw)

I don't know either what happened to the money raised at Barren Grounds just prior to its abrupt closure.

Would be nice to have a response from BA to this thread.

This may well have been a question of looking at the long term costs and the best use of BAs funds...so that (presumably) the funds that would have been used for the upkeep of Newhaven in the future are now diverted to something equally or more rewarding, while the new custodians continue to maintain Newhaven as a reserve (and the nominal sale price probably encouraged a suitably minded party to take it on) - sounds like good "bird business" to me!
