Red-legged Crake
Some info and comments from John Darnell at the WA Museum.
"Here are the details of the previous record. This Broome individual was
written up in Emu 1958 (Vol. 58, p415 - 418) - D.L. Serventy - "A New Bird
for the Australian List - The Malay Banded Crake".
The bird concerned is now a specimen in the W.A.M collection - a well
prepared skin. From article, the crake was first noted on a pearling lugger,
when it returned to Broome, July 16 - apparently, the bird had not been seen
on the vessel prior to a.m. that day. I can't believe even a rail could
secrete itself for long on such a small (rather open) boat. It was obviously
weak and emaciated, falling into the sea as vessel was mooring. It died, in
care, that night.
The fact that this second record was in May is interesting, probably
suggesting that the records are not of Northern migratory birds but
regional - maybe Indonesian ones - displaced by drying out of habitats. The
lesser Sundas "dry season" would correspond."
