A brief report of the Birds Australia boneseeding group trip to the You
Yangs Regional Park on Saturday 26 May 2007.
This park is about 40 kms south west of Melbourne and is popular with
mountain bikers, rock climbers and walkers. Recent rains have generated a
green tinge to the grassy areas of the park but otherwise the parks dams
are mostly dry.
Following our usual routine of doing a bit of birding, then lunch then
boneseed pulling and finally finishing with even more birding, a
productive day was again completed. Thanks Merrilyn Serrong for
organising these days on behalf of Birds Australia, Melbourne.
Some highlights for the day were as follows:
- good views of Purple-crowned Lorikeets, with one bird sitting quietly
atop a dead tree for all to observe its distinctive face markings.
- lots of Weebills at each site
- good views of Scarlet and Flame Robins plus a few Jacky Winters
- Wedge-tailed Eagles (2) and a Hobby near Flinders Peak
- A flock of Varied Sittella's and Goldfinches in the 'Bird Paddock' area
of the park.
- many Crested Shrike-tits at most stops
- White-naped and Black-chinned Honeyeaters near the Bird Paddock area
- an Owlet Nightjar in the Birds Australia boneseeding area.
Strangely, no sightings or calls heard of Diamond Firetails this time...a
few Eastern Grey Kangaroos and a single female Koala were the sole mammal
sightings. Interestingly, we heard at least two species of frog calling
from a small dam at the eastern picnic area.
Always a good site to visit with other birdos.
