Saw my first Yellow-tailed Black Cockatoos of the season in my home
suburb of Redfern yesterday, 3 birds heading west at about 0645. My
first sightings are normally in April but I was away for most of April
and May this year.

Not sure if anyone else has noticed their increasing visits to the inner
city in recent years? The last 3 years I have seen them frequently over
Redfern and nearby suburbs, and occasionally the city itself, from April
to Aug/Sep. Prior to 2004 I had very rarely seen the species in the city
or inner city areas. Nearby to the south around La Perouse, Botany Bay
NP and East Lakes have had several sightings of up to 45 birds in the
same months (and an earlier one in March this year at Centennial Park).

Great to have this magnificent bird and its haunting call so close to
the city centre.

Cheers

Eric Finley
