Hi Birders,
On 8-9 May 2007 I was in Balranald NSW with the Follow That Bird Tours and
each morning we saw 10+ Musk Lorikeets feeding in flowering Eucalypts, that
are street trees, the plants possibly e.woodwardii (?) from WA. This is the
first time that I have seen Musk Lorikeets in that town. Subsequently on our
trip we saw Musk Lorikeets in Pinnaroo and Waikerie in SA.
In the past they have been reported west ot Barham (on the Murray) and in
the Handlist of Birds in New South Wales pp 36 it says "sporadically on the
Murray River beyond Wentworth".
I notice that they were reported in Finley May-Oct 1973; and that they have
been reported for all Regions of NSW except for the Upper Western.
Certainly they are common in sections of the near coastal areas of the
Central Coast at present and I saw 250+ going to roost near my house at
Bateau Bay on 16/5/2007. They are resident here but the numbers flucuate,
having been present continuously since we moved into this house in May 2002.
The day we moved into our house was 17/5/2002 and on that day I saw my first
Swift Parrots at Bateau Bay, eventually the numbers peaked at 260+ birds in
May-June 2002, and I am happy to say that on 17/5/2007, 20+ Swift Parrots
were present again in the Blackbutts around my house!
