Hi folks
Just got back to a cold and wet Manjimup after a fabulous 4 day break at the
Broome Bird Observatory. The dry season doesn't officially start until tomorrow
but with many waders still around in breeding plumage it was too good an
opportunity to miss! Recorded over 100 species and managed to add 20+ species
to my own life list, including Dusky Gerygone, Broad-billed Flycatcher and the
Kimberley form of Lemon-bellied Flycatcher, Striated Heron, Red-winged Parrot,
Brush Cuckoo, Red-backed Fairy-wren, Mangrove Grey Fantail, White-breasted
Whistler and the yellow-billed form of Long-tailed Finch.
The Roebuck Plains are beginning to dry out now though we weren't able to get
out to the Yellow Chat site. However we did flush Red-backed Button-quail and
saw a flock of 100+ Magpie Geese along the way.
Wader flocks continued to build up and head over the Observatory on their
northward migration each afternoon. One day flocks totalling 2500 birds were
recorded, mainly Whimbrel, Knots, Grey-tailed Tattler, Terek Sandpiper and
Godwits.
I would recommend anyone visiting the region to spend a few days out at the
Observatory, especially as proceeds go towards maintaining the ailing
infrastructure as well as supporting important on-going research work (refer
the latest Wingspan article and appeal).
cheers
Peter Taylor
