I thought it timely to re-visit any existing resources engaging with
wetland drainage proposals and likely impacts on ecological systems and
futures so far as avifauna are concerned. I know there is plenty of
material dealing with water management and overall impacts on birds, but
I?m wondering if anything more recent has been written in direct response
to the drainage plans announced by the Federal Government recently.
Some people are suggesting that an official targeted policy on draining
will actually help in the long term to restore already ravaged ecological
systems in the Murray-Darling context: I'm gathering some research
resources to get a better grasp on these sorts of arguments.
So far I'm hearing plenty about tax-payer funded compensation schemes to
bail out farmers, irrigators and communities affected by long-standing
over-extraction regimes. There is some counter-discussion suggesting
governments should also be investigating damages proposals where people
responsible for over-extraction and poor land-management are made to pay
for their environmental abuse so that restoration projects can be funded
on a user/abuser pays basis. In the last week or so there has been the
old "prices will rise for you city-folk" line emerging in major
metro/national media contexts, but I'm not hearing much at all about
specific birdlife impacts.
