Magpies warbling

Here in relatively quiet Kew (Melbourne) the mornings are filled with
warbling magpies.

Actually this brings another question from a non-birder to my mind: why
do magpies warble?

We occasionally feed magpies stale dry cat food (known around our place
as either "moggy munchies" or "crunchy craps"). Normally there's a
family of three that accept these gifts. What usually happens is the
three of them are picking up scattered moggy munchies, and one will
begin to warble. The others may or may not join in. Is it some sort of
food communication thing? A familial bonding thing, perhaps?

I should note that we don't feed them enough to either create a
dependence on us, or (we think) raise any issues of trace poisoning.

I've just been asked another question by a non-birder that has me
stumped. I remember as a youngster hearing magpies doing a pleasant
warble, often in the morning. But I can't ever remember hearing them
around Sydney. Is this because there is just too much background noise?
Is it because they don't warble? Or am I just not hearing it for some
other reason?

Would love to know what others think, what happens in other cities.

Cheers
Graham Turner
