Osprey records - Victoria - Western Port Bay - French Island

Just responding to Eric's report of Osprey at French Island in Western
Port Bay Victoria.

The Atlas of Victorian Wildlife currently has just 11 records of the
species for the state, while French Island has no records of Osprey at
all. Indeed, in 20 years of visiting the island I have yet to observe
Osprey in the Western Port Bay area.

Friends of French Island (FoFI) has an extensive list of avifauna for
French Island (Quinn & Lacey 1999) but Osprey has yet to be recorded for
the island.

The atlas has old Osprey records from Shoreham in 2001 (BOCA 2003)(about
13 km west of French Island) and from Rhyll Inlet on Phillip Island (about
7 km south).

If any other observers are able to confirm Eric's observation this would
be great. I encourage observers to forward their sightings to the Atlas
wherever possible (see below).

cheers, Martin

Did a few hours cycling around this beautiful island from the ferry
point at Tankerton on Good Friday 6 April.

Also 2 Ospreys close to Tankerton - not sure if this is unusual for this
area.
