Hello all,
Just a short email to let people know that I've settled in Tasmania in
the Huonville district (35 km south-west of Hobart) and have begun my
research on the Tasmanian Masked Owl. Not much fieldwork at this stage-
lots of reading and planning. I did manage to photograph a large female
castanops near Scamander in north-east Tasmania a few weeks ago (I've
put a couple of reduced photos on the website at
http://www.wildlifing.com/TasmanianMaskedOwl.html). They are a massive
Tyto- putting most of the mainland birds I've seen to shame!
I'm living out in the country and so am getting a nice mix of birds
passing through the back garden (no owls yet though). Most days I have
Scarlet Robins, Dusky Robins, Superb Fairy-wrens, Yellow-rumped
Thornbills, Brown Thornbills, Grey Shrike-thrush, Black-headed,
Yellow-throated and Crescent Honeyeaters. Common Blackbirds, Starlings
and Goldfinches make up the common introduced birds- the starlings in
particular love the ripening apples on the apple tree, and are no doubt
raiding the many orchards around the place. I've wasted quite a few
hours already just watching the birds passing through the backyard, and
photographing a few!
I've started updating the website. I've put up a new Mammal gallery
section and am currently working on the non-passerines. I'll put them up
section by section.
