It's surprising that fauna could be considered as distinct from the "environment" when the idea of interdependence of components of an eco-system is well understood.

I recently watched several episodes of the "life of birds" doco and the example of brown tree snakes decimating the local bird population has stuck in my mind.

A US government website:

http://www.fort.usgs.gov/resources/education/bts/impacts/eco_perturb.asp

gives some insight to the some of the effects the loss of birdlife on the islands has caused. You have to read around the BTS specifics but it's clear the environmental impact from the loss of birdlife is substantial.

Tangentially, I was reading the latest "I and the Bird" and came across link on a link, so to speak, which lead to http:// www.birdersunited.com

The idea of a popular "Bird Lobby" is really quite facinating. The rating of canditates from all sides of politics on their "bird friendliness" is something whihc should considered with the pending Federal Elections. After all it might be nice to know who is committed to draining wetlands or will support environmental flows to riverine wetlands in the future.

cheers
Paul

Why should we care about our birds?

I'd love to hear what people think.
