Thank you Big Col (Judkins) for reminding me how remiss I have been in not advising group members of
this first class birdwatching location.
I spent several days at Cheynes Beach Western Australia in July 2006 and was totally amazed at its
beauty and birding potential.
My intention was to stay a couple of nights but I stayed for 4 nights. The only reason I am not
still there is that I had definite commitments to be elsewhere.
As it was I risked the wrath of my frightfully wonderful (Perth) sister-in-law by staying as long as
I did.
(I really should take those "How to be an Ex-wimp" classes.)
But it was well worth the risk-taking.
Cheyne Beach is about 60 km or so east of Albany, Western Australia, and not too far from Two
Peoples Bay, the renowned location for the elusive Noisy Scrub-bird.
But it could be that Cheyne Beach actually has more Noisy Scrub-birds than Two Peoples Bay. While I
was at Cheyne Beach I was told that 9 Noisy Scrub-birds had recently been relocated from Cheyne
Beach to other locations. I must admit that, in spite of spending a couple of hours listening to
several Noisy Scrub-birds which were obviously a matter of metres from my feet, I came away without
seeing one. I did see the Western Bristlebird within minutes of arriving in that heavenly location.
As there is only one place to stay in Cheyne Beach, the caravan park (unless you are lucky enough to
be related to one of the lucky devils who actually own a house there), I feel it will be acceptable
for me to recommend that establishment as the best place to stay. I can recommend the cabins: I had
Brown Quail, White-breasted Robins, the western form of the White-browed Scrub Robin, red-winged
fairy-wren, Brush Bronzewing and other exciting bird species playing around my cabin and eagerly
posing for photographs.
The only word of warning I would issue is to avoid the long weekends and the "holiday season". The
caravan park is quite large but I am told it is packed at certain times of the year.
Also, you can get supplies from the shop at the caravan park but it might be advisable to stock up
on "special" items at a larger town beforehand. (No pub or fast food outlets. Wonderful!)
