Back when Eltham (Vic) was well out in the bush, c. 1950s, some acquaintances moved into a half-built house there, with some small children. The move was bad enough without three snake sightings on the day - but a kind neighbour walked in with an invitation to park the children at their place for an hour or two, and a gift of a trio of guinea-fowl, as snake alarms. "When you hear them sing out, just go out with a shovel!" (Snakes enjoyed no legal protection then) . The free-range Guineafowl were very effective in this role, and even laid a few eggs into the bargain.
