I am planning a trip there in September and have found stacks of  
members on that group more than willing to offer advice and help out.
Recommended Field guide is the Heather/Robertson field guide - make  
sure you get the reprinted 2005 edition. I noticed in the Australian  
Museum shop in Sydney the other week that they had a copy but it was  
the old edition!!

I would love to hear how you got on when you return as i will be  
visiting only the South Island too.
