Quail day at Dryandra

This morning I headed out to do my usual Wednesday morning radio tracking at an enclosure in Dryandra State Forest. I tend to go there via the Narrogin-Congelin Rd and out via Turners Rd on the eastern side.

On the gravel of Narrogin-Congelin rd, beside a block of Dryandra, I became distracted by two small, green parrots taking off from the ground. I guess they must have been either Elegant Parrots or Purple-crowned Lorikeets - do the lorikeets come down to the ground? I noted there was a rock not far ahead... then the rock started moving and it didn't take long to realise the rock was actually a quail. I braked and swerved, and was pretty sure I saw it flutter off but I turned around to check and make sure. After another U-turn I was heading back the way I wanted to go and saw the quail on the road. On closer inspection it was certainly a Painted Button-quail. Only the second time I have seen this species and an excellent look. Imagine my delight when I saw 3 others puttering about on the road verge as well.
