Birders,

I did some research last night and couldn't find anything to support
my statements. I was mostly checking that there wasn't a second
mechanism at work, that of the bird's saliva holding the sand
particles together. Saliva is water with some hydrocarbons in it,
which once the water evaporates, leaves relatively long sticky
molecules to join everything together. This is how the Swallows build
nests. Pee-Wee's might do this as well, but I couldn't find anything
to either confirm or deny.
