Hi All,
Yes, New Zealand has set an exemplary example of pest control on their
sub-Antarctic islands. They also are keen to share their experience and
evolved technology to others experiencing the same problems. For
instance, their rat traps have been exported to Australia and other
Pacific countries to eradicate Black Rat (Rattus rattus) from seabird
breeding islands.
Does anyone know if the NZ Dept of Conservation has been consulted with
the Macquarie Island issue? Would a collaborative effort be a good
suggestion? NZ tour operators go to Macquarie Island so it is in their
interest to keep the island pest free also. Perhaps seek some financial
assistance from them to back up government support?
I think, for the sake of the albatrosses and petrels that breed on
Macquarie, it is worth investigating ALL of the options rather than let
the island fall victim to governmental blamestorming.
