Hi all,

I've just spent an enjoyable week at Mallacoota, giving me a chance to do some
birding around Croajingolong NP including Howe Flat north of Mallacoota Inlet.

At Howe Flat an Eastern Bristlebird was seen near the short board-walk that's
located on the foot track that leads south to the coast from Howe Flat Tk. The
board-walk is on the second track that you come across (as you head west) on
Howe Flat Tk - although it later joins up with first track - with habitat along
both tracks suitable for Eastern Bristlebird. The habitat is in coastal Teatree
heathland (riparian scrub of Woolly Tea-tree Leptospermum lanigerum and Manuka
L. scoparium) with a grass and bog sedge tussock understorey. To get to Howe
Flat Tk the best access (from the Princess Hwy) is via Maxwells Rd, then to
Mines Rd, to Buckland Rd, and then Lakeview Tk. (Note: Lakeview Track is 4X4
access only.) Also seen in the area was good numbers of White-throated Gerygone
and Scarlet Honeyeater, and a Grey Goshawk was seen at Lakeview.

Around Mallacoota an Eastern Reef Egret was seen on rocks between Secret Beach
and Quarry Beach, Topknot Pigeon and a Brown Quail (and a dark coloured Dingo)
were seen at Gipsy Point in the area near the Gypsy Point Lodge Jetty, a Ground
Parrot was flushed at Shipwreck Creek, a Cicadabird at Davis Creek, and large
numbers of Scarlet Honeyeater (in some places the most common HE) at numerous
sites including Shady Gully, Double Creek, Mallacoota Genoa Rd, Betka Beach and
Davis Creek. Also Little Tern, Great and 2 Red Knot amongst the many Bar-tailed
Godwit and Eastern Curlew at Mallacoota Inlet, and Spotted and Spotless Crake
at the treatment plant on Watershed (Pipeline) Rd.

Cheers,

Tim Dolby
