The breeding Pied Oystercatchers in the Richmond River area of northern NSW
have been monitored closely in recent years with most/all young being banded
with the help of Bob Moffatt who has been contracted to manage threats to
nesting birds and monitor the breeding outcomes. During the 2006/07 breeding
season Bob and DEC staff helped me fit alpha-numeric flags to all young fledged
in this area for permanent identification of individuals in the future. These
flags, which are yellow with black print (eg A7) were placed on the left tibia
and are relatively easy to read in the field with binoculars . A numbered ABBBS
metal band was placed on the right tibia of each bird. These juveniles are now
starting to leave their natal areas and may turn up on your local beach or
estuary. It would be really appreciated if bird watchers could keep an eye out
for these flagged birds and report sightings to myself at or
the Australasian Wader Studies Group website where an electronic submission of
information is available. It is important to note which leg the flag is on as
a similar system is being used in Victoria with yellow flags being placed on
the right tibia.
