Greetings,
After proving difficult to find the Painted Snipe showed themselves again this
morning. Went to the Swamp with Phil and Rosemary Frangos of Atherton to see
these birds if we could.

Apart from a Greenshank which was running around chasing some prey which was
capable of flight it was difficult to find any waders. Slowly the total crept
up to 1 Greenshank, 2 Wood Sandpipers and 5 Sharp-tailed Sandpipers for the
waders and lots of other interesting birds. Peter Lloyd tells me that species
diversity is down greatly on 5 years ago when he was regularly atlasing the
site.

We had decided to leave after having scanned the water's edge numerous times
with scope and bins but I took another sweep with the scope. There they were!
The female had her back to us and was sitting hard against a raised piece of
mud. About 250mm away the male was squatting behind two stalks as thick as a
pencil. Even through the scope and knowing they were there, it was not easy to
see them. After about another 40 minutes of sharing the birds with visitors to
the hide Rosemary said, "Look, she's moving!" The two birds moved off together
feeding and providing wonderful views.

Regards,
Alan Gillanders
