Hi all,

I spent a couple of enjoyable hours today (14/01/07) at Barren Grounds NR
with some good sightings including an Eastern Bristlebird.

With not many birds at Cecil Hoskins Reserve I decided to visit Barren
Grounds. I haven't spent much time in the south (of Sydney). It really is
scenic country side.

I followed the Flying Fox Pass walk (12.00pm - 1.45pm) until end with some
good sightings along the way. Birds seen:

Beautiful Firetail (2) - I haven't seen one since March 2001 in the Blue
Mountains
Bassian Thrush (2) - seen both on the way down and on the way up
  Superb Fairy Wren (3)
  White-browed Scrubwren (1)
  Rufous Whistler (1)
  Eastern Spinebill (2)
  Spotted Pardalote (1)
Crimson Rosella (2) - both juvenile
  White-throated Treecreeper (1)
  New Holland Honeyeater (several)
Eastern Bristlebird - an unexpected (new) sighting on the my return, about
800 metres from the carpark. There were three puddles full of tadpoles, near a
small sandstone clearing. One of them had almost dried up and so I grabbed
three muddy handfuls (of hundreds of tadpoles) and moved them to a pond with
water. Looking up I saw a Bristlebird to my left. I observed for several
seconds before it went into dense cover. I waited for several minutes but did
not see it again before it suddenly flew low across the path in front of me as
I started to walk back, out of site again.

  Great spot, great birding.

  Regards,
  Charles Hunter
