Hi everyone
It's great to see our prayers answered - it has rained for much of
the day here in Ocean Grove, and many other places in Victoria.
We've had some good heavy downpours. The bushfires are not
completely out but it has given most of the firefighters a few days'
respite, and a chance to get home to their families over Christmas.
Some of you will have already been into the fire areas to rescue
wildlife - well done on a largely thankless, and often grim task.
Reports from the already burnt areas tell us that not many animals
are being found, as the fires were just too large and often moving
too fast for ground-dwelling animals to escape. I haven't received
any reports on birdlife yet.
Thanks for the kind words I've received from many people - I get a
lot of enjoyment myself from Birding-Aus, and it is always pleasing
to hear of people who have made contact through the mailing list then
met up for some birding. It's a credit to everyone who is part of
this forum that we all get on so well nearly all the time: I think we
all understand what unites us - not just birding, but a love of the
outdoors, an awareness of the balance of the natural world. So thank
you for your contributions, and particularly for the time and energy
you dedicate to supporting our birds one way or another. And thanks
to the team keep Birding-Aus ticking over - archivist Andrew Taylor,
and moderator Bill Stent.
I hope you and your families have a very happy and safe Christmas
Russell Woodford
