I think that the common name for Porphyrio porphyrio rather depends on which country you live in. I knew it as Pukeko in New Zealand many years ago. It wasn't till I returned to Australia that I had to start calling it Purple Swamp-hen. Still prefer Pukeko, I think it sounds a bit more exotic than Purple Swamp-hen.
